| Well, this is my swan song! This year has seen big changes in my personal and business life, and I have tried to stay focused on FPA matters, too. Most of you know, but for those who don’t, I moved to Southern California this past summer. Back when Bill Thompson asked me to take the President-Elect position, I had no idea this might happen.
A wonderful romance and marriage moved me south. My new office is in Huntington Beach (hey, check out our website for my new contact info). I have joined/merged with Inspired Financial, a wealth management firm which focuses on ‘women in transition’, and I work with wonderful women.
Also, I was nominated to the National FPA Board Directors by Dick Wagner (Denver). Out of 47 nominees, I made the cut to the final 19, but eventually the selections went 5 or 6 more deserving candidates. I put that in God’s hands throughout the process, and this was confirmation that I need some time to settle in to my new locale.
My best of friends were my partners at Beechwood Advisory Group, and I will surely miss them. I am sure you have seen our camaraderie through the years. There is a twinge of sadness in leaving the Beech Boys, but excitement in my new adventure.
Back to our chapter: as always, great programs in 2007!! Dr. Somnath Basu in February, Ethics in May, Case Study in September, and finishing with Kent Noard, MBA, EA a few days ago. Education is the hallmark of our chapter.
We started a new website in 2007 and hired a new administrator (Odessa Trevarrow). The new website has been slow in construction, but once I handed it over to Odessa, sure and steady progress has been made.
I want to personally thank Jaime Kuykendall, our retiring Chapter Administrator, who served us for 5 years. I wish her all success in her expanded work duties with Rick Staggs et al.
Finally, a Big Thank You to the 2007 Board: Bill, Jayne, Ken, Bruce, John, Jack, and Rock. You helped carry me more than you know. And to the Chapter Members, you are stuck with me for one more year. I will serve out my position as Chair in 2008, then transfer to FPA Orange County in 2009. I will see you at the February meeting.
Respectfully,
~Mark Prendergast

Our Spotlight this month is focusing on Jayne Ferrante, our Chapter President for 2008.
Jayne graduated from Southeast Missouri State University at age 20 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with a Psychology Minor. She worked in the mental health/corrections fields (her second job was as a Counselor at Wyoming State Men’s Penitentiary, she was 21!) for 8 years. The Social Work/people oriented focus stuck. Jayne’s desire to help people discover their basic values and then establish goals and objectives to achieve the life they want to live has remained with her through her work today.
Jayne began in the Financial Services industry with New York Life in 1988. After several years with them, she left and established her independent practice in 1994. It was about a year later that she moved to Carmel with her husband to help him open a Physical Therapy clinic that concentrated on performance enhancement for golfers. Jayne initially spent her time in Carmel completing thirteen college level courses through the American College for her CLU and then challenged the CFP in November 1997. She took her prep studies through the Dalton Review.
Jayne kept an office in Fresno during this time. After achieving the CFP credential Jayne wanted to find a mentor to teach her comprehensive planning, only to realize that comprehensive planning was more or less a new way to work with clients made possible with computers and advanced software programs. Planners who had been practicing before had only done their work in segments. Jayne worked with Prudential Financial Planning for just over a year as she learned the process of fee-based investing and writing comprehensive financial plans. She was uncomfortable with Life Insurance quotas, and began her independent fee-based investment practice in 2000 with offices in Monterey and Fresno. She worked alongside an established advisor in Monterey, Ken Petersen, CFP®. Her client’s assets are held at Schwab Institutional. In 2001 Jayne settled back in Fresno full time, closing her Monterey office. She has been in this same office for over 7 years.
Jayne is single with no children. She loves to fly-fish, and is involved on the National Board of Fly Fishing Team USA, the non-profit program that provides regional and national trials to determine the team of flyfishermen that attend the Fly Fishing World Championships representing the United States of America each year. She also backpacks, backcountry skis, and enjoys riding her mountain bike. Her Wheaten Terrier Maddie goes to the office every day, and is a huge source of happiness for Jayne. In 2007 Jayne supervised and managed a restoration intervention of Big Meadows Creek in Sequoia National Monument. Jayne wrote all of the grants for funding this restoration project, and managed all of the intervention work. This was the culmination of several years of work. She is Conservation Chair of Fly Fishers for Conservation in Fresno.
Jayne is looking forward to getting to know members better individually, and watching as the Chapter grows in its involvement and inspiration.

Interspersed with the “theory” of equity transfer will be “real world” M&A stories from a planner who has “been there—done that.” Come learn how to acquire established financial planning practices, how they are valued, the typical terms, the tax impact, and much more during this informative and interactive presentation.

July 10th -
CSU Fresno, Craig School of Business 2:00-6:00 PM
This would be an ‘extra’ meeting and just focus on education and would not be included as a membership meeting. We are looking at topics such as: Reverse Mortgages, Senior Income Planning or utilizing the Virtual Learning Center classes through the FPA website and discussing live.
CSU Fresno, Craig School of Business, 2:00-6:00 PM
We are playing with the idea of having another Joint Panel Case Study. The focus of this meeting would be on the case study itself, and how CPAs, Attorneys and CFP’s can work together optimally to create a comprehensive plan for small business owners. Ideally this would be a joint meeting inviting the Society for California CPAs, AICPA, Estate Planning Council, the Society for Financial Service Professionals and the FPA.
